As a student at the University of St. Gallen you have to provide evidence of proficiency in a foreign language (other than the programme language English) by the end of your master’s studies. The university offers various language courses and exams to fulfill this language requirement. It can also be credited if you submit a recognised language certificate at the required level. This is the link with more information. In case of any questions, the Admissions Office (email@example.com) will be able to help you out.
Those of you who cannot provide any evidence of any command of German, have received a letter about the German language examiniation A1 from the Admissions Office (together with your admission letter). The letter contains a registration form for the German Intensive Course (introductory Programme). The course is divided into two parts: an introductory intensive course prior to the beginning of the semester and a regular course during the semester. Registration information will be sent to you before the beginning of the semester.
Whether for the fulfillment of the University requirements or for personal interest, regular language courses are provided during the semester – although you will not get any credits for the SIM curriculum. You will be able to find a portfolio of language courses including all the major European and Asian languages. On top of regular language courses, the language center also provides conversational courses in German, Swiss German, French, Spanish, Mandarin etc. for which students can sign up free of charge. People who would like to learn / improve their German can also join the SIMtensive German class during the semester offered by the SIM.
- SIMmies’ experience
- “Regular German courses are important and SIMtensive courses serve as a supplement”
- “In order to get the best out of language courses it is important to practice as much as possible, otherwise you may forget what you learned. “
- “Even basic knowledge of German or Swiss German can be very helpful in your daily life in St.Gallen”
- “Make sure to check the language requirement for graduation and plan accordingly”
Working on your personal development and improving your competitiveness in the job market is also an aspect of the SIM program. If you wish to work in German-speaking parts of Switzerland or neighboring German-speaking countries, you will require strong German language skills. Therefore, in parallel to the other HSG German courses, the SIM program invests in an additional German language course – the “SIMtensive German Program”. This German language program is taught in small groups and builds on the knowledge obtained in the regular German classes offered by the HSG. The focus is on conversation, writing, and some business German at appropriate levels. You will also have the chance to have a mock-interview at the end of your course, which is an excellent opportunity to test your skills.
More information and sign-up details will be provided to you during SIM-Start Professional.
